Many pet owners in Athens, Georgia, are struggling to care for their beloved animal companions. They are facing the heartbreak of relinquishing them to local shelters simply because they do not have the resources to continue to care for them properly. One major difficulty they face daily is the need to provide food for their animals.
The goal of the Athens Pet Food Bank is to create a community partnership to alleviate that stress by combining resources from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, Athens Area Humane Society, Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, Pets of the Homeless, and Action Ministries to coordinate a community-wide support system to provide a free, easily accessible, and reliable source of pet food to those in need. Additionally, we want to promote awareness of this need in the community, and correct common misunderstandings by becoming an informational resource about the circumstances of those in need. We will also create a volunteer network of support for these pet owners and their animals, which will provide opportunities for you to get involved!
