Cardiology
Heart or circulatory problems such as arrhythmias or murmurs can develop throughout an animal’s life. Our hospital offers advanced diagnostics such as echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart), ECGs, and cardiac auscultation to evaluate heart health. We are also one of only a handful of facilities across the nation to offer transvenous electrical cardioversion, an alternative treatment option for equine patients suffering from atrial fibrillation.
Dermatology
Skin conditions in large animals often reveal deeper health challenges. Persistent itching, hair loss, or wounds may signal allergies, infections, or autoimmune diseases. Our dermatology experts at UGA work closely with our internal medicine team to perform physical exams alongside specialized tests like biopsies and allergy panels to uncover the root cause—not just treat symptoms.
Endocrinology
Endocrine disorders in large animals can often go unnoticed until they start to impact your animal’s performance, behavior, or overall health. Our internal medicine team is trained to recognize and manage a range of hormonal conditions such as Cushing’s disease, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), and more.
Gastroenterology
Digestive health is critical for your animal’s overall well-being. Symptoms like diarrhea, colic, or unexplained weight loss often point to underlying gastrointestinal problems. Using tools such as ultrasounds, endoscopy, and fecal testing, our team investigates thoroughly to diagnose and treat conditions such as parasitism, ulcers, colitis, liver disease, or chronic inflammatory conditions.
Neonatology
The first days of life are critical for newborn large animals, and early medical intervention often determines the likelihood for survival when complications occur. Our team specializes in the care of newborn foals, calves, and other large animal neonates facing issues such as prematurity, failure of passive transfer, systemic infections, or congenital abnormalities. We are equipped to provide advanced diagnostics and therapies, including bloodwork, imaging, intensive supportive care, and monitoring around-the-clock.
Neurology
Neurological issues can manifest in many ways such as loss of coordination, seizures, unusual behavior, or muscle tremors may all indicate a problem. Our experienced team utilizes specialized neurologic exams and imaging techniques, including MRI and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, to pinpoint the cause and design an effective treatment strategy.
