Small Animal Blood Bank | Emergency and Critical Care
The UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital is fortunate to have its own Small Animal Blood Bank. The animal blood bank processes and stores canine blood and feline blood products used in the Small Animal ICU, including:
- Fresh whole blood
- Packed red blood cells
- Fresh frozen plasma
- Stored plasma
- Platelet rich plasma
The UGA VTH produces more than 50 to 60 percent of the blood used at the hospital. All canine blood donors are privately owned by one of our veterinarians, veterinary technicians, or staff members. All feline blood donors are kept in a closed colony.
All blood donors go through an extensive screening process before entering the program and are re-screened annually. Canine emergency blood donors are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The UGA VTH does not currently sell product to outside hospitals.
