Coming to a new university and college can sometimes be daunting – below are some helpful links that
offer valuable information as you start your career in the CVM. Setting up your lab requires familiarity with UGA processes for opening a lab, obtaining permits for research (biological or otherwise, and safety training).

UGA also offers an online program called the Keys to UGA: New Faculty Academy. The goal of this
program is provide faculty with key information and resources to help smooth their transition into
faculty roles.

For new faculty, a mentoring committee is one means to keep a faculty member on track towards
promotion and tenure and as a means to clarify or provide insight into issues as they arise. New faculty
are required to have a mentoring committee and ideally this should be in place within six months of
commencing in a unit. It is recommended to consult with your department head to arrange the
committee.

  • UGA’s Office of Faculty Affairs offers a range of information on faculty at various stages of their career path from research to teaching, to mentoring, promotion and leadership development.
  • UGA Elements is an online tool that many faculty use to create annual reports and keep track of courses taught, research grants submitted and funded and as a means to create an external public profile.
  • The Graduate School is home to all things for graduate students. The School now offers a certificate training program in graduate mentoring and is a good resource for new faculty starting off.
  • Faculty who conduct research will need to ensure that permits are in place for the type of research they wish to conduct. Most of the information on requesting permits is available through the research office page. The Research Office also offers resources on grants and foundations and funding opportunities as well as development of ideas and strategies for patents or licensing.
  • Training for biosafety and other training to support professional development and research related educational needs are available through the Professional Education Portal (PEP).
  • The Center for Teaching and Learning offers a wealth of support for faculty establishing a teaching program at UGA as well as support for use of the online education tool eLC.
