Phi Zeta, the Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine, originated in 1925 by a group of senior veterinary students in the New York State Veterinary College at Cornell University and was organized nationally in 1929 at a meeting in Detroit, Michigan.- The XI (“ski”) chapter of the University of Georgia was chartered in 1959 and there are currently, thirty-two chapters.
- A Greek word, which in Latin is spelled PHILOZOI means “love for animals.” The abbreviation of Phi Zeta was adopted as the name of the society.
- Phi Zeta’s mission is the continuous advancement of the veterinary profession, for high educational requirements, and for rigorous scholarship.
- The objective of the Society shall be to recognize and promote scholarship and research as it relates to animal welfare and disease.
- The annual Phi Zeta Ceremony is held in April of each year.
