UGA College of Veterinary Medicine introduces new online professional master’s program

By Communications Team

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia has announced the formation of a completely online Master’s program in Comparative Biomedical Sciences. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and is designed to provide a broad foundation for students who intend to pursue professional careers in veterinary or human medicine, biomedical engineering, biomedical research, or biomedical/diagnostic technology. This is a very timely program that will particularly benefit students given the current pandemic situation.

This non-thesis program can be completed online and requires 30 credits for completion, which can be achieved in 1-2 years. The program has courses including veterinary and human anatomy, histology, physiology, cell biology, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, pathology, laboratory animal research and clinical concepts. Studies indicate that students who complete such preparatory health sciences programs are better prepared to handle the rigors of the different professional curricula.

“Students who are taking a gap year can remain in the safety of their homes and can still complete this unique program that will prepare them well for any biomedical professional career,” said Steven Holladay, UGA Foundation Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Biosciences and Diagnostic Imaging.

“We have a great group of celebrated faculty teaching these courses, and we are excited to welcome the first cohort in the fall of 2020”, said Sheba MohanKumar, program director.

“We are very excited for this program, and it could not have been developed at a better time,” said Lisa K. Nolan, Georgia Athletics Association Distinguished Professor and Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “Students in this program will receive a broad curriculum of knowledge that will be of great benefit to them in their pursuits—all from the safety of their homes.”
