Traveling with your pets can be a rewarding but sometimes challenging experience. Our team is here to help guide you every step of the way, whether it’s a weekend trip to the beach or relocating to another country.
The UGA Pet Center Health provides both domestic and international health certificates for cats and dogs and can help navigate the varying requirements for travel. Each state and country may have different policies regarding pet travel. Our team recommends reviewing USDA guidelines for your destination early on as you make your travel plans.
Traveling internationally?
We strongly recommend researching international travel requirements as early as possible. Some destinations have strict regulations that include specific timelines for vaccinations, testing, and other health-related documentation, sometimes starting months in advance..
A consultation and records review are required before travel certificate appointments can be scheduled. Please contact our office to request a consult and review requirements for your pet’s specific travel needs.
Veterinary records that may be requested include:
- Medical history
- Vaccination records
- Rabies vaccination certificates
- Microchip information (if available)
- Lab test results (if required and already completed)
Pet Travel Tips:
Schedule a Pre-Trip Checkup
Schedule a check-up to ensure your pet is healthy for travel. Update vaccines, refills medications, and ask for a copy of medical records if needed.
Use an Appropriate Carrier or Restraint
Use a crash-tested carrier or harness when your pet rides in the car. Pets should never ride loose in the car, especially not the front seat.
Never Leave Them in a Parked Car
Even with windows cracked, temperatures can rise quickly and become dangerous. Keep the car cool, and take your pet with you whenever possible.
Pack the Essentials
Bring food, water, bowls, leash, waste bags, medications, and a familiar toy or blanket to reduce stress. Include your vet’s contact info in case of emergency.
Take a Break!
Stop every few hours for bathroom and stretch breaks. If your pet experiences anxiety or motion sickness, ask your vet about safe calming options.
