Job Description: Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Small Animal Shelter Medicine
The Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Small Animal Shelter Medicine position is a full-time tenure or
clinical-track position primarily focusing on the role of veterinarians in Shelter Medicine and student
training.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Participate in clinical and laboratory instruction for and supervision and evaluation of veterinary
students and interns with hands-on instruction, and case-based rounds or small-group didactic
sessions
• Participate in providing client and shelter services to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH),
with emphasis on, but not limited to Small Animal Shelter Medicine service
• Coordinate Shelter Medicine (SM) service and work with affiliated shelter partners to provide
medical services and operational recommendations, where applicable, for continual improvement
of the quality of facilities and management of shelter animal care.
• Provide quarterly and annual reports reflecting activities and achievements with shelter partners
• Coordinate Shelter Spay/Neuter program in conjunction with Small Animal Surgery
courses/faculty
• Participate in community outreach service activities including House-call services
• Scholarship and Professional Development: The faculty member is encouraged to pursue clinical
research and professional development
• Maintain professional licensure in Alabama, certifications, and medical recordkeeping per
requirements of the VMTH
• Provide after-hours emergency support to interns when on duty
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Physical Requirements/Additional Duties
o Standing for extended periods of time
o Exposure to high noise levels
o Ability to lift 40 pounds
o Drive up to 2 hours
The faculty member is expected to:
• Participate in the tripartite mission of teaching, research, and service
• Participate in innovative teaching and service programs to enhance/improve the quality of
outcomes in the Department and the College
• Attend Department, College, and University meetings
• Serve on Department, College and University committees
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• DVM, or equivalent degree. Successful completion of DABVP-SM certification, or ABVP-SM
residency, or Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine is preferred, however, candidates who
have >3 years of clinical shelter medicine and high-volume spay/neuter experience will be
considered.
• Clinical experience and documented competency in small animal shelter medicine and surgery
required
• Effective written and verbal communication skills
• Proven organizational, time management, and planning skills required
• Must possess ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff,
volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, and respectful manner at all times
• Maturity with the ability to use good judgment, and a demonstrated ability to work with others in
a collegial team environment
Salary: Commensurate with education, training and experience
