Biography

Binu Velayudhan is the Director of Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a veterinarian and a board-certified virologist. Dr. Velayudhan earned his PhD in infectious diseases from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA from Texas Tech University. Before joining the UGA, he worked as the Assistant Director of North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System in Raleigh. He has many years of experience in infectious disease diagnostics, viral pathogenesis, and host-virus interactions. The focus of his current research is on the development and validation of novel diagnostic assay platforms for the detection of pathogens associated with animal and human diseases. The mission of the AVDL is to provide accurate and prompt diagnostic and disease surveillance services to veterinary practitioners, livestock producers, companion animal owners, wildlife conservationists, clinicians of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, scientists who utilize animals in research, and state and federal disease regulatory officials.

Research Interests

  • Development and validation of conventional and molecular laboratory diagnostic tools for detection of pathogens that are of animal and human health significance
  • Point-of-care test development using novel nucleic acid-based platforms
  • Development and evaluation of vaccines and vaccine challenge models
  • Understanding host-pathogen interactions of viruses affecting animals and humans through genomic and proteomic approaches
  • Rural engagement and workforce development
