Biography

Dr. Binu T. Velayudhan is Professor and Director of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. A board-certified veterinary virologist (American College of Veterinary Microbiologists), he leads diagnostic, research, and educational programs focused on emerging and transboundary animal diseases, One Health, and veterinary laboratory systems. His research emphasizes the development of innovative molecular and point-of-care diagnostic technologies, including LAMP, CRISPR, and AI-enabled platforms, to enhance disease surveillance and biosecurity. 

Prior to joining the University of Georgia, Dr. Velayudhan held leadership positions at the North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System and the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, where he directed diagnostic virology, molecular diagnostics, and laboratory operations. He earned his PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota and has more than two decades of experience in veterinary diagnostics, infectious diseases, and laboratory leadership. 

Dr. Velayudhan has secured numerous federal and state research grants, and serves on national committees supporting animal health preparedness and diagnostic laboratory networks. He is committed to mentoring the next generation of veterinary scientists and advancing collaborative approaches to animal health, public health, and agricultural biosecurity.
