Research Interests
Dr. Whitfield-Cargile’s research focuses on equine gastrointestinal health and disease, with an emphasis on host-microbiome interactions, intestinal barrier function, and mechanisms of gastrointestinal injury. Using translational and comparative approaches, he investigates the effects of NSAIDs, exercise, and disease on the equine gut while developing novel diagnostic tools, biomarkers, and therapeutic strategies to improve equine health and clinical outcomes.
As a veterinary clinician scientists he also maintains a diverse portfolio of research interests that includes wound healing, equine surgery, sports medicine, respiratory disease, and other clinically relevant conditions affecting equine health and performance mimicking clinical practice.
