Biography
Ilhan Tomris’ initial journey into science began during his Bachelor’s studies at Hogeschool Utrecht. His interest was piqued by molecular biology courses, which inspired him to build a broad skillset in molecular techniques. Seeking to expand his repertoire, he pursued advanced imaging methodologies at the University of Amsterdam.
Having acquired these diverse capabilities, he faced a pivotal question: What use is an instrument finely tuned, if it is never called upon to play a melody? This led him to his PhD research at the University of Utrecht, where he characterized the receptor-binding mechanisms of influenza and coronaviruses. Integrating his background in molecular biology and advanced imaging proved vital to the success of this work.
Today, he continues this endeavor at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC), applying these harmonized skills to advance veterinary and viral research.

Clinical Interests
Ilhan Tomris’ clinical focus is on the diagnosis, surveillance, and management of viral respiratory infections, specifically influenza and coronaviruses. He uses his understanding of viral binding and tissue tropism to improve diagnostic accuracy, support veterinary infection control, and address zoonotic risks impacting both animal and human health.
Research Interests
Ilhan Tomris’ research investigates the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of receptor-binding, focusing on influenza and coronaviruses. Specifically, he studies viral glycobiology to understand how glycoconjugate specificity and host cell receptor distribution dictate tissue tropism and cross-species transmission.
