Biography
Dr. Kayla Garrett is a postdoctoral researcher at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS), where her research interests include zoonotic diseases and parasites of wildlife.
Garrett earned her master’s degree from the University of Georgia in 2017, studying Babesia species parasites in raccoons. Following graduation, she worked as a technician at SCWDS, assisting with a project on Dracunculus medinensis (Guinea worm) in collaboration with The Carter Center, before becoming a lab manager.
While maintaining her role as lab manager, Garrett began her PhD research on Echinococcus species tapeworms in wild canids in the eastern United States. Her position also allowed her to contribute to research on multiple pathogen systems beyond her dissertation and author or co-author a variety of manuscripts.
Garrett completed her PhD in 2026 and plans to continue researching a variety of disease systems at SCWDS as a postdoctoral researcher.
