Dr. Barletta graduated from the University of Turin, Italy, in 2002, where he completed his PhD in 2006. He then moved to the United States, where he completed a rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Purdue University in 2007. Following his internship, he remained at Purdue University to complete a residency in anesthesiology and earn a master’s degree. He served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at the University of Minnesota for three years before joining the University of Georgia in 2013.
Throughout his career, Dr. Barletta has mentored numerous small- and large-animal interns and anesthesiology residents. He has presented at many national and international conferences on a wide range of topics in veterinary anesthesiology.

Clinical Interests
Dr. Barletta’s clinical interests center on veterinary anesthesiology, with a particular focus on pain management and analgesia, the anesthetic and perioperative care of critically ill patients, and large-animal anesthesia, especially equine anesthesia.
His clinical work also includes laboratory animal anesthesia and the development of strategies to improve patient safety, comfort, and recovery during the perioperative period. He has extensive experience managing complex anesthetic cases and optimizing analgesic protocols across a variety of veterinary species.
Research Interests
Dr. Barletta’s research interests are closely aligned with his clinical expertise and focus primarily on pain assessment and pain management, evaluation of analgesic and anesthetic techniques, and improvement of perioperative care in veterinary patients. His scholarly work has explored the efficacy of analgesic interventions, anesthetic protocols in both large and small animals, and factors affecting anesthetic outcomes and patient recovery.
Through his research, he aims to advance evidence-based approaches that enhance animal welfare, improve pain control, and optimize anesthetic safety in clinical veterinary practices.
