CVM Student Spotlight

Eva Walker-Fairchild, Class of 2027

Highlighting the incredible summer experiences of our College of Veterinary Medicine students.

We’re proud to spotlight Eva Walker-Fairchild, a rising third-year veterinary student from Charleston, South Carolina, who is pursuing her passion for mixed animal medicine through meaningful, hands-on service with the People and Pets Project.

Eva has been involved with the People and Pets Project for the past year, working to bring essential veterinary services to underserved communities in Macon and other areas of Georgia. This summer, her commitment extended internationally as she joined the organization on its annual trip to Guatemala, where they hosted a three-day One Health clinic providing care to both people and animals.

The People and Pets Project of Guatemala is a collaborative effort that brings together healthcare providers and veterinarians who generously offer their time and expertise. Through this partnership, the organization provides both preventive and specialized care to those in need. Their high-volume spay and neuter clinics serve both pets and the street animal population in an effort to humanely reduce the number of strays and promote the overall well-being of communities and animals alike.

During the clinic, Eva played a vital role alongside veterinarians and technicians from both the U.S. and Guatemala. The team successfully spayed and neutered over 180 pets in just three days. Eva was essential in assisting the surgeons by administering additional sedation when needed and handing them instruments and supplies.

When asked what she enjoyed most, Eva shared, “I enjoyed how much the owners were involved with their pet’s care. They held them while their animals were getting shots, they laid by them during recovery from surgery, and sometimes even watched the surgeries being performed. They wanted to be active participants in their pet’s well-being, despite many of these animals never having had the opportunity to receive veterinary care.”

Looking ahead, Eva hopes to pursue a rotating internship after graduation, with plans to practice mixed animal and emergency medicine.

We’re proud to showcase Eva’s compassion and hands-on impact—and we look forward to seeing all that she accomplishes in her veterinary journey.
