A Hands-On Experience for All Ages at the University of Georgia’s Veterinary College
The University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine recently hosted its annual Open House, a cherished tradition that has been going strong nearly as long as the college itself. This event invites community members of all ages to explore the fascinating world of veterinary medicine and discover all that the college has to offer. From tours of the state-of-the-art veterinary hospital to interactive displays featuring zoo and exotic animals, Open House provides a fun and educational experience for everyone.
One of the standout attractions is the Teddy Bear Surgery, a fan favorite that brings out the hands-on side of the event. Children are given the opportunity to become “anesthesiologists” and “surgeons” as they participate in a physical exam of their teddy bear and then gear up in surgical scrubs to “anesthetize” their furry patient.
This unique event is fully run by the college’s first- and second-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students, who not only demonstrate their skills but also engage with the next generation of veterinary professionals. Open House also serves as a way to support these students at the college. All donations collected during the event go toward helping the students cover the costs of their veterinary licensing exams.
For years, the event has been a platform to showcase the incredible work being done at the college and inspire future veterinarians to pursue their dreams in animal care. As this beloved tradition continues to grow, the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine looks forward to welcoming even more visitors next year!
