The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology studies the functions of the living organism and how drugs and poisons affect them. Our goal is to teach and research the physiological, pharmacological, nutritional, and toxicological basis of disease and therapeutics.
Research
Our research is far-reaching, exploring all aspects of physiology and pharmacology. From how neural pathways control energy, balance, and obesity to cell signaling in smooth muscle, the pathophysiology of vascular disease, and examining the molecular pharmacology of endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus, we are searching for solutions to some of today’s most pressing issues.
Graduate Programs
Our graduate programs give you the tools to pursue a career in research or teaching through an intensive experience in the research laboratories supplemented with academic instruction that includes course work, study of current literature, and seminars. We offer a PhD in Integrative Physiology and Pharmacology, and we have faculty and students who are part of both UGA’s Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program and Neuroscience Program. We also help support the college’s dual DVM-PhD program.
If you’re looking for Master’s programs, we have a two- to three-year program with an area of study in physiology and pharmacology that is part of the CVM’s Comparative Biomedical Science program. If you’re preparing to apply to professional school such as vet school, pharmacy school, medical school, we also offer a non-thesis, cohort-based professional Master’s program with an area of emphasis in physiology and pharmacology as part of the CBS program.
